The name Immanuel was never used as a name for Jesus while He was on earth, but it was a title given to Him. It's a description of who Jesus is.
The name Immanuel described Jesus as being God, for the title literally means "God with us". Some people would have us believe that Jesus isn't God, but that He was simply a godly man, or a very godly teacher. But not only did Jesus claim to be God - John 10:30 "I and my Father are one", but He also received worship as God - "John 19:7, standing before Pilate the Jews tell him, "We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God" Furthermore, Jesus received worship as God. In Matthew 2:11 the Magi came and worshiped Him. In Matthew 14 when Jesus walked on the water and calmed the sea, the disciples bowed down and worshiped Him. In John 9 we see where the blind man who Jesus healed worshiped Him. And thirdly, in the New Testament Jesus is specifically called God. John 1:1 says "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God". The "Word" is a reference to Jesus, because vs. 14 says "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."
So, Jesus is God with us. He's not a far away, distant and unconcerned for us. But God is with us. And of course, Jesus has ascended to heaven, but He is still with us in the Holy Spirit today. Jesus promised in John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things..." This is a promise for all who call on the name of the Lord and declare Him to be the Savior who takes away the sins of the world. If he's not already, you can make Jesus your Savior by calling Him the Lord of your life, claiming His forgiveness for sin as your own.
